The Birth
Eager to take a breather - if not retire decades early - from the 50+ hour corporate work life, I sat on my corner of the couch one weekend morning and pulled up a Mr. Money Mustache early retirement blog post. A fellow reader had written to the revered blogger that he had become waterlogged by a German luxury car, a new house, an avalanche of law school debt, kids, among other things. He wanted to know how he might retire given his situation. Mr. Money Mustache laid out a simple plan, and I ate it up like so many similar posts.
I would read these “Dear Abby” style posts day and night. I wanted hone my skills, prepare my mind, and bolster my knowledge in preparation for an early retirement. And, I wanted more.
I had a problem, though. I was running out of blog posts to read because Mr. Money Mustache was enjoying his early retirement and sharing only trickle of new content. Stewing on my predicament, I considered how a early retirement mobile game might solve my problem. It could have real life scenarios similar to the blog posts I was reading and an unlimited combination of others. It might be fun too. Plus, a game could have unique features that help players learn financial independence/retire early (FIRE) concepts or test their knowledge if they are well-versed. I searched and did not find any games specific to early retirement. I then formed Purple Squid and embarked on a journey to build a game for myself and others to binge on FIRE, virtually.
And by the way, I have since retired early.
